Thus, 120 mL 1.98 M ether soln. of MeMgCl [676-58-4] was added over 10 min to 400 mL Et2O soln. contg. 27.1 g dichlorobis(methylcyclopentadienyl)titanium [1282-40-2] at 0°. The mixt. was stirred overnight at room temp. to give dimethylbis(methylcyclopentadienyl)titanium (I) [78169-38-7]. C3H6 was added at partial pressure 178 mm Hg to a mixt of 2 L pentane and 5 mmol I at 45°. TiCl3 (10 mmol) was then added. When 56 mm Hg of C3H6 was consumed, C2H4 was added to bring the monomer partial pressure to 180 mm Hg. After 22.2 L of the mixt. was consumed, the monomer feed was shut off and the reactor was vented to the vapor pressure of pentane at 45°. C3H6 (2.4 L) was added to give 34.5 g block ethylene-propene copolymer [9010-79-1] having intrinsic viscosity 4.47 dL/g.

Thus, stirring 5 mmol I [prepd. from dichlorobis(methylcyclopentadienyl)titanium [1282-40-2] and MeMgCl] and 10 mmol TiCl3 in 2 L pentane with C3H6 at 45° until the C3H6 partial pressure fell from 178 to 56 mm Hg, then adding C2H4 until the monomer partial pressure was 180 mm Hg, and feeding 22.2 L C2H4-C3H6 to maintain this pressure, then venting the unreacted monomers, adding 2.4 L C3H6, and stirring gave 34.5 g block copolymer contg. 40.7% C2H4, 13.7% cryst. polypropylene, and 12.5% cryst. polyethylene, with intrinsic viscosity (Decalin, 135°) 4.47 dL/g, Shore A hardness 83 and 73 at 23° and 70°, resp., compression set 48% at 70°, and tensile strength 1.67 ′ 106 kg/m2.
