As a result, the prepd. ceric ammonium nitrate, (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6, has a high purity. The sulfur removal method is as follows: the addn. of deionized water at 0.5-10 times, preferably 1-3 times, as much as the cerium compd. to the cerium salt, Ce(OH)x(NO3)y + nH2O (y > 0, x + y = 4, n is an integer 3 0), and stirring to obtain the cerium compd. sol; adding 18-20% of ammonia water to adjust the pH of the sol to between 10-11, which is represented by the formula, Ce(OH)x(NO3)y + nNH4OH --> Ce(OH)4 + nNH4NO3, and the sulfur contained in the cerium compd. is converted into ammonium sulfate; washing the reaction product (ppt.) with deionized water to remove (NH4)2SO4 and adjusting the pH of the ppt. to between 7-8. .

The obtained sulfide upconversion luminescent material avoids disadvantages of high-temp. solid phase method of high temp., long reaction time, and large grain size, and has the advantages of high efficiency, saved energy, convenient operation, small grain size of up to nanometer scale, low IR response threshold value, and broadband IR upconversion effect, and has universality for detection of IR light with wavelength of 810-1,550 nm. .
