DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 57 (Ceramics) A 3rd component (CaO, SrO, BaO, SiO2, CoO, or MnO) was added to ZnO ceramics contg. 1 mol% Nb2O5 in order to alter the properties of melts formed during firing. The elec. resistivity, voltage-current (V-I) relation and microstructure of sinters were examd. The addn. of CaO, SrO, and BaO improved the wetting of intergranular layers to ZnO grains and increased the room-temp. elec. resistivity. The addn. of SiO2 also improved the wetting, but did not affect the elec. properties. CoO produced no changes in the fired body. Although it did not strongly affect the microstructure, the addn. of MnO markedly increased the room-temp. resistivity and gave rise to a nonlinear V-I relation. The ZnO specimen contg. only MnO also had high elec. resistivity and some V-I relation nonlinearity. The addn. of a small amt. of Nb2O5 to the ZnO-MnO system strikingly decreased the elec. resistivity, but an increase in the amt. of Nb2O5 addn. (1 mol%) again enhanced the elec. resistivity and led to a nonlinear V-I characteristic. .
