DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 53 (Mineralogical and Geological Chemistry) The S isotopic compn. was detd. of veinlet and disseminated sulfides and the distribution of the various forms of S (pyrite, FeS, and sulfate) was studied in the altered basalts from Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 504B. The pyrite in hydrothermal veinlets has d34S values of -18.3 to +1.6m, with 80% of samples showing enrichment in 32S relative to the meteorite std. The greatest variation in d34S values (~10-20m) was obsd. in the interval 270-350 m from the sediment-basalt boundary. In deeper horizons (400-500 m interval) the variation in S isotopic ratios decreases (5-7m) and then reaches a min. (3-4m or less) in the lowest horizon of pillow basalts (530-560 m interval). 1317-37-9 and 1309-36-0 are just another two chemicals used in this study. The main process affecting the redistribution of S and its isotopes in the basaltic basement is the vertical and lateral filtration of O2-contg. oceanic waters, occurring in thick, permeable zones of pillow basalts. .
