DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) The aminoglycosides sisomicin sulfate [53179-09-2], gentamicin sulfate [1405-41-0], tobramycin [32986-56-4], amikacin [37517-28-5], and kanamycin monosulfate [133-92-6] are highly active against staphylococci including the penicillinase-positive strains. Sisomicin is more effective than amikacin and kanamycin. Escherichia coli, Enterobacter, susceptible Klebsiella, and susceptible Pseudomonas strains are inhibited by sisomicin, gentamicin, or tobramycin, with sisomicin being the most effective antibiotic because of its high antimicrobial activity. Amikacin and sisomicin are effective against Serratia marcescens, but both aminoglycosides have to be given in high doses in infections because of the high inhibitory concn. for Serratia. Sisomicin demonstrates a high antimicrobial activity against indole-pos. Proteus species, Enterobacter, and gentamicin-sensitive Pseudomonas strains. The low proportion of resistance to sisomicin (7.6% in 370 organisms) is only exceeded by amikacin with a rate of 0.6%. The low rate of resistance and the high antimicrobial activity are essential advantages of sisomicin.
