A simple method of prepg. such a compn. is provided. The method utilizes the reaction of solid BPO4 [13308-51-5] with a solid metal oxide or salt, at an elevated temp. to yield a metal phosphate and a B oxide or salt. Thus, BPO4 was prepd. by slowly firing a syrupy stoichiometric mixt. of H3PO4 and H3BO3 in air and grinding up the solid. Typically, 5.6 g of BPO4 and 9.7 g of CeO2 were ground up and placed in a Pt or SiO2 boat which was transferred to SiO2 tubes. The tube assembly was heated to 1100°. An atm. of Ar was used in the furnace. The gas evolved was passed through a Beckman O analyzer and a wet-test meter. The O anal. and x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy confirmed that CeO2 was quant. converted to CePO4. .
