DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 53 (Mineralogical and Geological Chemistry) The geochem. significance of Mg2+, Na+, and Sr2+ supports a model of dolomitization by brackish groundwater. This groundwater zone contains significant quantities of Mg2+ to facilitate dolomitization (Mg/Ca <1). Na concns. (70-185 ppm) in the calcite [13397-26-7] indicate formation in the brackish water. Dolomite [16389-88-1] has Na concns. of 50-1400 ppm suggesting formation in waters of similar salinity. Sr in calcite is 320-660 ppm suggesting diagenesis in slightly saline waters in an open system. The Sr2+ concns. in dolomite (241 ppm on av.) are characteristic of diagenesis in water less saline than seawater. Av. Sr concns. of the dolomite occur in 2 distinct groups: 260 ppm for dolomite with MgCO3 39-43 mol% and 195 ppm for dolomite with MgCO3 44-50 mol%. This difference indicates that the MgCO3-rich dolomite recrystd. in a less saline environment than the lower MgCO3 dolomite. The geochem. of the more nearly stoichiometric dolomite (44-50 mol% MgCO3) suggests a closer approach to equil. with the dolomitizing fluid. 7440-23-5 and 7440-24-6 are just another two chemicals used in this study. The more saline environment has higher Mg/Ca ratios and promotes more Ca-rich dolomite during diagenesis. The less saline waters saline waters allow crystn. to proceed more slowly, producing better ordering in the dolomites, textural preservation, and development of subhedral to euhedral rhombic crystals. .

In these diagrams specific fields can be defined which are characteristic for the various modes of formation. The genetic formation obtained for fluorite or calcite can be extended to other minerals in paragenesis. This enlarges the applicability of the variation diagram widely. The fractionation of REE during the formation of Ca minerals is discussed, including the behavior of REE complexes in solns. A simple closed box model for the fractionation of REE is described and its results are transfered to an open system model such as that for hydrothermal vein mineralization processes. Ce and Eu anomalies quite often obsd. in Ca minerals might serve as useful indicators for the origin of the ore-bearing solns. and the Eh-conditions during deposition, resp. As examples of the application of REE fractionation, the results of 4 case studies are summarized. .
