The action of methylmercury on cell membranes. I. Permeability of methylmercury across cell membranes in direct comparison with mercury chloride. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The permeabilities of methylmercury and HgCl2 across human red cell membranes were compared using 203Hg compds. Methylmercury incorporation reached max. at 37.degree. and 0.degree. in 3 min in the range from 80 to 90%. Methylmercury incorporation at concns. of 10-8, 10-6 and 10-4M was the same, but HgCl2 incorporation at 10-6 and 10-8 was lower. Cysteine [52-90-4] inhibited the incorporation of methylmercury and HgCl2, but dithiothreitol was not so effective. Plasma proteins inhibited the incorporation of methylmercury only slightly, but that of HgCl2 strongly. EDTA [60-00-4] did not inhibit the methylmercury incorporation but did inhibit that of HgCl2. Methylcobalamine [13422-55-4] did not affect the incorporation of methylmercury and HgCl2 even at 37.degree. and 0.degree., with or without plasma proteins for at least 60 min. After the incubation of HgCl2 with methylcobalamine the 203HgCl2 was nearly completely changed into methylmercury in the absence of red cells. Binding of methylmercury to cell membranes was estd. The values were larger than that for binding to Hb on the basis of protein wt.
