The terminal Si-Si bond in these linear chlorosilanes are relatively unreactive towards Cl, with chlorination occurring instead at the interior Si-Si bond positions in the chain. With larger amts. of Cl, the Me group in 1,2-Cl2Si2Me4 can also be chlorinated. The relative reactivities toward Cl are: II >>> I >1,6 .gtoreq.1,5 .gtoreq.1,4 >1,3 >>1,2. .
