Kinetics of the gas-phase reactions of nitrate radicals with a series of dialkenes, cycloalkenes, and monoterpenes at 295 ± 1 K
Kinetics of the gas-phase reactions of nitrate radicals with a series of dialkenes, cycloalkenes, and monoterpenes at 295 ± 1 K. Atkinson, Roger; Aschmann, Sara M.; Winer, Arthur M.; Pitts, James N., Jr. (Statewide Air Pollut. Res. Cent., Univ. California, Riverside, CA 92521, USA). Environ. Sci. Technol., 18(5), 370-5 (English) 1984. CODEN: ESTHAG. ISSN: 0013-936X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 59 (Air Pollution and Industrial Hygiene) Section cross-reference(s): 23, 24, 30, 67 Rate consts. for the gas-phase reactions of the NO3 radical, an important reactive constituent of nighttime ambient atmospheres, have been detd. for the first time for a series of dialkenes, cycloalkenes, and monoterpenes by using a relative rate technique. By use of a rate const. for the reaction of NO3 radicals with trans-2-butene [624-64-6] of (2.11 ± 0.24) ′ 10-13 cm3/mol.-s the rate consts. obtained at 295 ± 1 K were (in cm3/mol.-s units): 1,3-butadiene [106-99-0], (5. 127-91-3 and 628-41-1 which are cas registry numbers are also used here.34 ± 0.62) ′ 10-14; isoprene [78-79-5], (3.23 ± 0.38) ′ 10-13; cyclohexene [110-83-8], (2.87 ± 0.34) ′ 10-13; 1,3-cyclohexadiene [592-57-4], (7.2 ± 1.7) ′ 10-12; 1,4-cyclohexadiene [628-41-1], (2.89 ± 0.35) ′ 10-13; 1,3-cycloheptadiene [4054-38-0], (3.8 ± 0.9) ′ 10-12; a-pinene [80-56-8], (3.4 ± 0.8) ′ 10-12; b-pinene [127-91-3], (1.4 ± 0.3) ′ 10-12; D3-carene [13466-78-9], (5.9 ± 1.3) ′ 10-12; and d-limonene [5989-27-5], (7.7 ± 1.7) ′ 10-12. These NO3 radical rate consts. for the naturally emitted hydrocarbon isoprene and the monoterpenes, in conjunction with measured ambient NO3 radical concns., show that nighttime reaction with the NO3 radical can be an important, if not dominant, loss process for these orgs. Similarly, these reactions can also be an important loss process for NO3 radicals, and hence for NOx, during nighttime hours. .
