DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Foods) Section cross-reference(s): 37 Headspace gas chromatog. was used to evaluate packaging materials for possible alterations of food taste and odor. 2,2,4,6,6-Pentamethylheptane [13475-82-6] was identified as being responsible for an off-flavor assocd. with low d. polyethylene [9002-88-4]. The headspace gas from 4 types of polystyrene [9003-53-6] contained relatively large amts. of styrene [100-42-5], small amts. of ethylbenzene [100-41-4], and sometimes some cumene [98-82-8]. The flavor threshold of styrene was tabulated for 7 foods; values were 0.1-5 mg/L, generally increasing with increased fat content.
