DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 16 (Fermentations) Section cross-reference(s): 79 In the title method, zincon [135-52-4] forms a blue-colored complex with Zn in a weakly alk. medium. Interfering metals (Al, Cu, Fe, Ca, and Mn) are sepd. from Zn using a Dowex 1 .times. 8 ion-exchange column from which Zn is eluted with 2N HCl and N KCl into a 0.1N NaNO3 soln. Zincon (0.05% soln.) in pH 9.2 buffer is added and the absorbance is measured at 620 nm. The relative std. error was 3.52-9.41%, depending on wine type. The method is less laborious, faster, and more accurate than currently used methods.

The interfering components include substances which form ppts. with KCN, B- buffer, or I (Hg, Be, Bi); substances that decrease the absorbance of the Zn2+-I complex (Al, Cr(III), Fe(III), Mn(II), MnO4-); and substances that form complexes with I and increase the absorbance of the Zn2+-I complex (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, HCOH [50-00-0], CH3COH [75-07-0]). The interferences of these compds. can be eliminated by using preconcn. by extn. or ion exchangers.
