Strontium ranelate (CAS NO.135459-87-9) is used as bone density conservation agents, which mean agents that inhibit bone resorption and/or favor bone mineralization and bone regeneration. They are used to heal bone fractures and to treat metabolic bone diseases. Here it is the only antiosteoporotic agent which both increases bone formation and reduces bone resorption, resulting in a rebalance of bone turnover in favor of bone formation. It stimulates the calcium sensing receptors and leads to the differentiation of pre-osteoblast to osteoblast which increases the bone formation. It also stimulates osteoblasts to secrete osteoprotegerin in inhibiting osteoclasts formed from pre-osteoclasts in relation to the RANKL system, which leads to the decrease of bone resorption.
Strontium ranelate , its cas register number is 135459-87-9. It also can be called Distrontium renelate ; Osseor ; Protelos ; Protos ; Ranelic acid distrontium salt ; 3-(3-cyano-4-carboxymethyl-5-carboxy-2-thienyl)-3-azapentanedioic distrontium salt ; 3-Thiopheneacetic acid, 5-(bis(carboxymethyl .It is a crystalline solid.
