DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 31 (Alkaloids) Section cross-reference(s): 22 From a long-stored hydrochloric acid ext. of Gelsemium elegans Benth., contg. koumine (I) as the major alkaloid, hydrakouminol (II, R = OH) (III) was isolated. The redn. of III with Et3N×BH3 in HCl gave neo-dihydrokoumine (II, R = H). The mechanism for the formation of III was proposed to be acid-induced hydration of I via two consecutive Wagner-Meerwein rearrangements. .
