- Antifungal resistance in Candida spp

Antifungal resistance in Candida spp. isolated in Italy between 2002 and 2005 from children and adults. Gualco, L.; Debbia, E. A.; Bandettini, R.; Pescetto, L.; Cavallero, A.; Ossi, M. C.; Schito, A. M.; Marchese, A. (Sezione di Microbiologia del Di.S.C.A.T. University of Genoa, Genoa 16132, Italy). International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, 29(2), 179-184 (English) 2007 Elsevier B.V. CODEN: IAAGEA. ISSN: 0924-8579. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 10 (Microbial, Algal, and Fungal Biochemistry) The activity of amphotericin B, fluconazole, flucytosine, itraconazole, and voriconazole was tested in vitro against 618 clin. Candida spp. isolates, using the broth microdilution or the disk diffusion method (voriconazole). Amphotericin B and voriconazole were the most potent antifungal agents assayed (100% of susceptible strains). Resistance to fluconazole and itraconazole was detected in three (0.7%) and 11 (2.7%) isolates of Candida albicans and in four (3.7%) isolates of Candida glabrata. Flucytosine intermediate, resistant strains, or both, were obsd. in C. albicans (0.3% and 0.7%), C. glabrata (2.8% intermediate) and C. tropicalis (15.2% and 15.2%). C. krusei was the least susceptible species to azoles. No statistically significant differences in the rates of resistant isolates depending on site of infection and age of the patient were obsd., with the exception of C. albicans and itraconazole (higher percentage of resistance in children). At present, acquired antifungal resistance represents an uncommon finding in most Candida spp. circulating in Northern Italy. .

- All Rights Reserved. Treatment of Cutaneous Infection by Alternaria alternata With Voriconazole in a Liver Transplant Patient. Luque, P.; Garcia-Gil, F. A.; Larraga, J.; Jimenez, B.; Tome-Zelaya, E.; Serrano, M.There are some reagents like 137234-62-9 is used in this study. T.; Barrao, M. E. (Hospital Clinico Universitario Lozano Blesa, Zaragoza, Spain). Transplantation Proceedings, 38(8), 2514-2515 (English) 2006 Elsevier Inc. CODEN: TRPPA8. ISSN: 0041-1345. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Alternaria alternata is a dematiaceous mold capable of causing systemic and dermatol. infections in immunosuppressed patients. We present a case of a liver transplant patient with cutaneous alternariosis and no response to amphotericin B lipid or surgical debridement of the lesions. Treatment with i.v. voriconazole was initiated, followed by the oral protocol, with complete resoln. of the lesions. Voriconazole is an efficient alternative for the treatment of cutaneous lesions produced by A alternata. .
