Production of vanillin from old newsprint by means of lignosulfonate manufacture and recovery
Production of vanillin from old newsprint by means of lignosulfonate manufacture and recovery. Sande, Walter E.; Sears, Karl D. (Rhone-Poulenc Inc., USA). U.S. US 5589030 A 31 Dec 1996, 6 pp. (English). (United States of America). CODEN: USXXAM. CLASS: ICM: D21C005-02. NCL: 162007000. APPLICATION: US 1994-350835 7 Dec 1994. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) Section cross-reference(s): 45 Lignosulfonates are recovered from newsprint by a method comprising the steps of: (a) converting newsprint to a crumb pulp comprised of ~20-50% fiber solids on an oven dry basis and the remainder water; (b) cooking the crumb pulp in a medium comprising crumb pulp and cooking acid soln. selected from the group consisting of NaHSO3, Mg bisulfite, ammonium bisulfite, Ca bisulfite or mixts. thereof wherein the wt. ratio of cooking acid soln. to the crumb pulp fiber is ~3-6 for a sufficient time, temp., and pressure for lignosulfonate removal; (c) sepg. the crumb pulp fiber from the spent sulfite liquor; and (d) recovering the lignosulfonates from the spent sulfite liquor; vanillin is then prepd. from the removed lignosulfonates.Several substances like 13780-03-5 may be metioned in this study. The recovered lignosulfonate has a high degree of sulfonation and a low free sugar content. In an example using NaHSO3 to produce Na lignosulfonate from waste newsprint, the vanillin percent from spent sulfite liquor solids and from the Na lignosulfonate produced was 1.66 and 6.18, compared to the resp. values of 3.16 and 5.08% for a pulp mill spent sulfite liquor control. .
