DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) MoCl5-based catalysts and WCl6-based catalysts were evaluated in the polymn. of 1-bromo-2-phenylacetylene in PhMe at 30° for 24 h. When MoCl5 was used alone, the yield of MeOH-insol. polymer [91726-87-3] was ~40% and its mol. wt. was £3000. When Bu4Sn [1461-25-2], Ph4Sn [595-90-4], Et3SiH [617-86-7], or Ph3Bi [603-33-8] were added in 1:1 molar ratio with MoCl5, polymers with no.-av. mol. wt. 600-11,000 were obtained in >80% yield. The addn. of the cocatalysts to WCl6 increased polymer yield but the no.-av. mol. wt. were 2600-3000. The effects of solvent and temp. on the catalyzed polymn. were also detd. Polymn. in the presence of Mo(CO)6 [13939-06-5]-CCl4 or W(CO)6 [14040-11-0]-CCl4 indicated that catalyst selectivity was governed by central metal atom and not by the ligands (CO or CCl).

S was 50-70% removed. .
