DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 40 (Textiles and Fibers) By using a low-temp. ext. and a CHCl3 ext. of safflower, the specific wavelengths of UV and visible absorption spectra were studied, and a linear relation was noted between color concn. and optical d. at max. absorption wavelengths, 400 nm for safflower yellow (I) [1401-20-3] and 516 nm for carthamin (II) [36338-96-2], resp. In dyeing silk fibers with these colors, the highest exhaustion was obtained under conditions of dye bath pH 3 for I and pH 5 for II, dyeing temp. 20-30°, and dyeing time 90-120 min, and a superior color fixing effect was produced at citric acid [77-92-9] concn. >0.1%.

The lightfastness was examd. Yellow dyes were easily faded by sunlight. .
