In these compds. the macrocyclic ligands are tridentate (for Mo) or bidentate (for W). Their 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectra are discussed. .

The decompns. were followed by ESR spectroscopy. The concns. of W(V) species goes through a max. at 250-350°. For metal loadings of 0.5-1.0%, the spin concns. are of the order of 1015-1016 spins/g on both SiO2 and Al2O3 supports. Five distinct ESR signals are attributed to 2 types of W(V) species. Two signals (at g values near 1.94 and 1.89) are attributed to the g^ and gw signals of W(V) species present in an axially sym. arrangement of O2- ligands. The other signals (at 1.99, 1.84 and 1.79) probably arise from W(V) ions in an orthorhombic symmetry. These latter species are found mostly on the more dehydroxylated forms of Al2O3, esp. at higher temps. of decompn. By comparison, the temp.-programmed redn. of a conventional Al2O3-supported WO3 yields only the axially sym. type of W(V) species. .
