BiVo4.xBi2MoO6.yBi2WO6 [x, y = 0-3; (x + y) = 0.1-3] are finely divided pigments with high tinctorial strength, and are prepd. by basifying solns. of Bi(III) salts, vanadates, and molybdates from pH <0 to 0.1-3.5, heating at 50-100°, and calcining the the ppt. at 300-800°. Thus, adding 135 mL 50% NaOH over 30 min to a mixt. of 371 mL Bi(HO3)3 soln. (11% Bi), 65 mL 65% HNO3, 18.1 g Na2MoO4.2H2O, and 85 mL H2O (raising the pH from <0 to 0.5), stirring 2 h at 90°, filtering and washing the ppt. and calcining it at 600° for 1 h gave BiVo4.0.75 Bi2MoO6 with surface area 74.7 m2/g. An alkyd coating contg. this pigment after 480 h salt spray corrosion testing showed rusting degree Ri 2, blistering (DIN 53 209) m 5/g 1-2, and under-rusting Ri 2, compared with 2, 1-2, and 2, resp., for PbCrO4, and 3, 1-4, and 3-4, resp., for BiVO4. .

In the tetragonal paraelastic phase the elastic consts. 14059-33-7 is also in the experiment. c11 - c12, c66, and c16 are all predicted to behave anomalously near Tc although none are expected to vanish. From anal. of the acoustic properties of BiVO4, zero-velocity pure transverse acoustic modes are expected to propagate along the ferroelastic domain wall directions at Tc. Predicted relations between pressure and temp.-dependent properties agree well with exptl. observations. The theory also accurately predicts the ratio of secondary and primary spontaneous strains in the ferroelastic phase. .
