A novel type of polycondensation of polyhalogenated organic aromatic compounds producing thermostable polyphenylene-type polymers promoted by nickel complexes. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Di- and polyhalogenated arom. compds. such as p-dichlorobenzene or 4,4'-dibromodiphenyl ether are polycondensed by dehalogenation with Mg in the presence of Ni complexes to give high yields of polyphenylenes. The Ni complexes used are (2,2'-bipyridine)nickel dichloride [22775-90-2] and bis(triphenylphosphine)nickel dibromide [14126-37-5]. The complexes catalyze the polymn. of 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene and hexabromobenzene, but also cause ring-opening polymn. of the THF solvent, forming polymers contg. arylene and polyoxytetramethylene sequences. Polymg. p-dibromobenzene in a CO atm gave a product contg. CO and p-phenylene units in a ratio of approx. 26969-37-9 and 27880-39-3 are just another two chemicals used in this study. 1:2, confirming that the polymn. proceeds on the Ni complex. .
