Poly(vinyl chloride) gel membrane contg. dibenzo-24-crown-8 ether [14174-09-5] was tested for ion selectivity to the cationic forms of local anesthetics. The electrode responded ideally to dibucaine [85-79-0] and hexylcaine [532-77-4] among 8 local anesthetics tested. A dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether [14187-32-7] electrode also responded to these 2 anesthetics, although less ideally. Membranes with dicyclohexyl crown ethers were not good sensors for any local anesthetics tested. The relationship between chem. structures and sensitivity is discussed.

The catalytic activity was V > VI > VII. The presence of excess hydroxide in aq. phase increased polymn. rate, implying facilitated transfer of bisphenolate anions to the org. phase by the phase-transfer catalyst. The reactivity of the bisphenolate anions was: I > II > III > IV. This was attributed to the difference in their transferability from the aq. to the PhNO2 phase by the catalyst. .
