DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 22 The rate of formation of silver halide can be used as an indication of the rate of formation of oxonium ions and the rates of pptn. of AgX are in the expected order AgI>AgBr>AgCl in the ring-opening reactions of nonpolymerizable 2-methyltetrahydrofuran [96-47-9] and tetrahydropyran [142-68-7] model compds. with allyl chloride [107-05-1], allyl bromide [106-95-6], or allyl iodide [556-56-9]. The results are independent of counterion and of heterocycle. Side reactions such as H abstraction, elimination of H halides, and reaction with counterion are probable. These reactions were investigated as model reactions for the graft polymn. of poly(tetrahydrofuran) onto halogenated butyl rubber. Although it was possible to prep. pure grafts by this method, precise control of the no. and length of the branches was difficult.
