- Effect of copper metal powder and some of its salts on the aqueous polymerization of methyl methacrylate and on the tacticity of obtained polymers. Moustafa, A. B.; Abd El-Ghaffar, M. A.; Badran, A. S. (Lab. Polym. Pigments, Natl. Res. Cent., Dokki/Cairo, Egypt). Acta Polym., 35(1), 68-70 (English) 1984. CODEN: ACPODY. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) The no.-av. mol. wt. of poly(Me methacrylate) [9011-14-7] prepd. in H2O using NaHSO3 catalyst in the presence of Cu decreased in the order no Cu > Cu metal > CuCl2 > Cu2Cl2 > Cu(OAc)2 [142-71-2] > Cu(NO3)2 > CuSO4. 7440-50-8 and 7758-89-6 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. Polydispersity in the presence of Cu phthalocyanine [147-14-8] and Cu (biphthalocyanine) [29132-42-1] was the same, but mol. wt. with the latter was ~24% higher. No.-av. mol. wt. decreased with increasing initiator to a min. and then increased. Mol. wt. and polydispersity in polymn. in the presence of NaCl were the same as those in its absence, confirming a radical mechanism. .

- Catalytic action of copper acetate on styrene polymerization in the presence of water. Nikolaev, A. F.; Belogorodskaya, K. V.; Kryzhanovskii, A. V.; Suvorov, A. V. (Leningr. Tekhnol. Inst., Leningrad, USSR). Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, 274(1), 121-3 [Phys. Chem.] (Russian) 1984. CODEN: DANKAS. ISSN: 0002-3264. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Data for the polymn. of styrene (I) [100-42-5] in the presence of Cu(OAc)2 (II) [142-71-2] catalyst, F3CCO2H [76-05-1] cocatalyst, and significant amts. of H2O (exceeding the molar concn. of II by more than an order of magnitude) showed that metal salts can exert a direct catalytic effect on the cationic polymn. of I in the presence of H2O if the reaction of I with the cocatalyst includes an intermediate stage in which a highly polarized compd. is formed. In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 76-05-1 and 7732-18-5 EPR and 1H-NMR data indicated that paramagnetic aquo complexes of Cu were converted during polymn. to diamagnetic dimers through complexation of the Cu with intermediate compds. formed in the polymn. .
