Factors influencing the growth of Attamyces bromatificus, a symbiont of attine ants
Factors influencing the growth of Attamyces bromatificus, a symbiont of attine ants. Powell, R. J.; Stradling, D. J. (Dep. Biol. Sci., Univ. Exeter, Devon, UK). Trans. 14292-26-3 and 12408-02-5 are cas registry numbers. These chemicals are also mentioned in this article. Br. Mycol. Soc., 87(2), 205-13 (English) 1986. CODEN: BMSTA6. ISSN: 0007-1536. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 10 (Microbial Biochemistry) Investigations of conditions for optimum growth of the attine symbiont A. bromatificus revealed that it was inhibited by light and grew best at temps. between 20 and 25°, whereas temps. >30° were lethal. Mean gongylidia size remained small in cultures at 15°. The pH of ant-maintained fungus gardens ranged from 4.35 to 5.00 irresp. of the plant material used and showed a trend of increasing acidity with age. Cultures on buffered PDA solid medium showed max. yields of gongylidia biomass between pH 4.5 and 5.0. The ant metathoracic gland secretions, b-hydroxydecanoic acid and IAA had only a minor indirect influence on growth through pH regulation. In liq. culture, growth form was atypical and lacked gongylidia. The best indexes of fungal growth were those of fresh wt. and gongylidia prodn. on solid media. .

Agric., Kobe Univ., Kobe 657, Japan). Kobe Daigaku Nogakubu Kenkyu Hokoku, 16(1), 277-90 (English) 1984. CODEN: KNGKAP. ISSN: 0452-2370. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 60 (Waste Treatment and Disposal) Section cross-reference(s): 19 Phenolic substances were most abundant 3 mo after the initiation of composting. The concn. of p-coumaric acid [7400-08-0] decreased to 1/3 at 9 mo but that of ferulic acid [1135-24-6] did not decrease. Major long-chain fatty acids showed the highest concn. at 6 mo and were still high even at 9 mo. Long-chain fatty acids with an odd no. of C atoms decreased at 3 mo but increased gradually afterwards. The concn. of 3-hydroxydecanoic acid [14292-26-3] showed little change during the 1st 3 mo but decreased to 1/10 at 9 mo.
