DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Macrocyclic oligoesters contg. furan rings were synthesized by condensation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxylic acid (I) using 2-chloro-1-methylpyridinium iodide (II) [14338-32-0] as condensing agent. Water-insol. products were sepd. by gel-permeation chromatog. and characterized by IR, NMR, mass spectra, and elemental anal. The product distribution depended remarkably on the reaction conditions. When the II-I mol ratio was 1.65 in pyridine, the cyclic trimer [86271-40-1] and the tetramer [86271-41-2] were obtained, both in >30% yield. In addn. There are some commonly used reagents like 14338-32-0 in this article. higher cyclic oligoesters, linear oligoesters, and the polyester [86274-69-3] were formed. When a large amt. of Bu3N [102-82-9] was used as a scavenger of hydrogen halides in toluene, the polyester was the main product. Condensation in hexane in place of toluene yielded the linear oligoesters as main products. A mechanism is proposed for the formation of the cyclic oligoesters. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Polycondensation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxylic acid (I) [6338-41-6] was studied. Oligoesters of I were prepd. by using 2-chloro-1-methylpyridinium iodide (II) [14338-32-0] as a polycondensation agent. Soln. polycondensation in pyridine at II-I molar ratio >1.2 at 60° gave selectively the macrocyclic (crown) oligoesters at total yield >91%: cyclic trimer (>33%), tetramer (>35%), pentamer (>13%) and higher oligomers (>9%). Polycondensation in n-hexane in place of pyridine with Bu3N [102-82-9] as a scavenger of hydrogen halide produced selectively the linear oligoesters from trimer to hexamer. Use of PhMe instead of n-hexane gave the polyester and the cyclic and linear oligoesters. A mechanism is proposed for the formation of the cyclic oligoesters. .
