DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 55 (Ferrous Metals and Alloys) Carboxylated lactones are described, which inhibit corrosion of metals by O-bearing hard waters. The lactones may be used in the form of their acids or salts, alone or in combination with other corrosion or scale-inhibiting materials. For example, 5-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4,4-diacetic acid (I) [144-16-1] was prepd. from citric acid [77-92-9] and trioxymethylene [110-88-3]. Similarly, 5-oxo-2-carboxy-1,3-dioxolane-4,4-diacetic acid (II) [61799-63-1], 5-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-acetic acid [61799-62-0], 2-carboxy-4-methyl-5-oxo-1,3-dioxolane [61799-61-9], 2-carboxy-5-oxo-1,3-dioxolane [61799-60-8], and 3 other carboxylated lactones were prepd. by cyclocondensation of the appropriate acids, etc. These compds. were tested in concns. of 50 and 150 ppm. with steel [12597-69-2] electrodes in polarization-test cells contg. synthetic hard municipal water of total hardness (as CaCO3 in distd. H2O) 319 mg/L, by the Tafel Slope extrapolation method. The corrosion rates with no inhibitor and with 50 and 150 ppm I were 42, 12, and 3 mils/year and 50 and 150 ppm II, 16 and 2 mils/year. Similar results (corrosion-rate redns. 50-95%) were obtained with the other compds. tested. .
