Samples were taken at 3, 40, and 175 m below the interface at a water depth of ~500 m. The time scale of the redn. depends on the carotenoid. E.g., redn. of ￡2 double bonds was obsd. for zeaxanthin [144-68-3] in the oldest sediment (~340,000 yr B.P.) but no redn. was obsd. in the younger samples (~5000 and ~56,000 yr B.P.). Canthaxanthin [514-78-3] has ￡2 double bonds reduced in the 56,000-yr-B.P. sample and ￡5 double bonds reduced in the oldest sample. b-Carotene [7235-40-7] was not reduced. Spheroidenone [13836-70-9] has almost disappeared and echinenone [432-68-8] is absent from the oldest samples.

The EPTC-mediated height and fresh-wt. decreases were light dependent. As EPTC concn. increased, chlorophyll (CHl) and total carotene (CAR) contents (mg/g fresh wt.) increased under 270 mEinsteins/m2/s, whereas CHl a:b, CHl b; CAR, and CHl a + b:CAR ratios decreased. Under 270 but not at 20 mEinsteins/m2/s, the quantities of b-carotene [7235-40-7], lutein epoxide [28368-08-3], lutein [127-40-2], violaxanthin (I) [126-29-4], antheraxanthin [640-03-9], and zeaxanthin [144-68-3] decreased per mg CHl b as EPTC concn. increased. Under 270 mEinsteins/m2/s, I content (mg/g fresh wt.) was not altered by EPTC treatment, but antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin contents increased, resulting in decreases in the ratio of epoxidized/de-epoxidized components of the I cycle.
