A purified diet, which produced prolonged prothrombin time in chickens within 2 weeks, did not produce deficiency symptoms when fed to catfish for 30 weeks (>2800% gain). Supplements of menadione sodium bisulfite [130-37-0], menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite [14451-99-1], sulfaguanidine [57-67-0], or sulfasuxidine [116-43-8] did not have effects on growth rates, prothrombin times, Hb, and hematocrit levels. The feeding or injecting of dicumarol [66-76-2] into catfish, which had been fed the vitamin K deficient diet with sulfaguanidine for 24 weeks, did not result in prolonged prothrombin times. The feeding of pivalyl [83-26-1] resulted in prolonged prothrombin times, which were not prevented by high levels of vitamin K. Catfish have an extremely low (if any) requirement for vitamin K and the blood clotting mechanisms of catfish may be different from that of mammals or birds.

The EtOH ext. of the sample is transferred to C2H4Cl2, evapd. in the presence of 1% butylated hydroxytoluene in C2H4Cl2, and the residue is dissolved in cyclohexane and cleaned up on an adosrbent clay (Floridin XS) column before colorimetry as the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivs. Menadione and MSB and MPB stabilities were increased in premixes with lower moisture levels, and in those without trace elements. Stability increased in the order menadione, MSB, and MPB.
