Mechanism of the action of two-dimensional condensed layers of org
Mechanism of the action of two-dimensional condensed layers of org. substances on the kinetics of electrochemical reactions. Stenina, E. V.; Fedorovich, N. V.; Damaskin, B. B.; Girlya, L. N. (Mosk. Gos. Univ., Moscow, USSR). Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, 273(2), 389-92 [Phys. Chem.] (Russian) 1983. CODEN: DANKAS. ISSN: 0002-3264. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 72 (Electrochemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 67 An exptl. and theor. basis was sought for the mechanism of action of 2-dimensional condensed layers of 3-hydroxyhomoadamantane (I) [14504-80-4] and 1-adamantanol [768-95-6] on the kinetics of the discharge reaction of anions (e.g. BrO4- and S2O82-). A characteristic of the curves of the dependence of the differential capacitance on the potential for such layers is the absence of adsorption-desorption peaks and a sharp drop in the capacitance corresponding to the 2-dimensional phase transition from q = 0 to q = 1. The introduction of I into the soln. leads to the inhibition of the discharge reaction of S2O82- in all the range of adsorption potentials, while the effect of the 2-dimensional condensed layer of I on the reaction rate is so great, that in a soln. with addns. of this substance there is obsd. a dependence of the reaction rate on the potential and compn. of the soln. emerging from the theory of slowed discharge.
Some effects of the action of dimeric condensed layers of organic substances on the kinetics of electrochemical reactions
Some effects of the action of dimeric condensed layers of organic substances on the kinetics of electrochemical reactions. Fedorovich, N. V.; Stenina, E. V.; Damaskin, B. B.; Girlya, L. N. (Mosk. Gos. Univ., Moscow, USSR). Elektrokhimiya, 21(7), 995-1000 (Russian) 1985. CODEN: ELKKAX. ISSN: 0424-8570. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 72 (Electrochemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 66, 67 Polarization curves are presented of the redn. of S2O82- on a dropping Hg electrode in solns. of Na2SO4 and 2 ′ 10-4 M 3-hydroxyhomoadamantane (I) [14504-80-4] or 2 ′ 10-4 M adamantic acid (II) [828-51-3], during the adsorption of which, at the Hg/soln. interface, 2-dimensional condensed layers are formed. The dependence is shown of the charge of the electrode on the electrode potential for a mean geometric supporting electrolyte concn. of 3.5 ′ 10-1 and 7 ′ 10-2 M. Polarization curves are shown of the redn. in 2 ′ 10-4 M KIO3 + 1 N NH4Clwith additives of 1-adamantanol (III) [64-17-5] 2 ′ 10-4, I 2 ′ 10-4, and II 2 ′ 10-4 M. Finally, polarization curves are given of the redn. in solns. of 2 ′ 10-4 M NaBrO4 + 1 M Na2SO4 with additives of EtOH 5%, of III 2 ′ 10-4, of III 2 ′ 10-4 M + EtOH 5%, and of II 2 ′ 10-4 M. The difference in the action of 2-dimensional condensed layers in the redn. of BrO4- is related to the participation of the adsorbed mol of II in the discharge of the BrO4- as a proton donor, inasmuch as the pK of II is significantly less than that of III, the structure of which is near that of II. An analogous effect of II was obsd. also for the redn. of IO3-; the addn.of I and III inhibits the reaction, and in solns. of II the redn. rate of IO3- increases, and the half-wave potential is shifted in the direction of less neg. potentials.
