(I) [9002-89-5] and carboxymethylated I films and the optimum conditions are detd. for the thermal treatment of crosslinked I. An increase in the treatment time of H3BO3-crosslinked I to >2 h increased the rigidity and brittleness of the film. An addnl. 2 h treatment with 50% aq. glycerol improved the rigidity and brittleness and increased the gas permeability of I film from 1.3 to 1.8-2 mg/cm2-h. An increase in treatment temp. increased the resistance to H2O and decreased the porosity of I films. Crosslinking of carboxymethylated I gave nonporous films on treatment with 20% H3BO3. A 10 min treatment of carboxymethylated I with 0.5 and 1M Zr(SO4)2 [14644-61-2] gave films completely insol. in H2O. Films with improved mech. and sanitary properties and decreased swelling in H2O were obtained on crosslinking I with Cr salts.
