The influence of externally applied organic substances on phloem translocation in detached maize leaves
The influence of externally applied organic substances on phloem translocation in detached maize leaves. Heyser, Wolfgang; Heyser, Rosemarie; Eschrich, Walter; Leonard, Oliver A.; Rautenberg, Margret (Forstbot. Inst., Univ. Goettingen, Goettingen, Ger.). Planta, 132(3), 269-77 (English) 1976. CODEN: PLANAB. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 11 (Plant Biochemistry) 14C-labeled assimilates in predarkened corn leaf strips were moved away ("pushed") from the site of application of 75 mM solns. of sucrose, trehalose, maltose, D-glucose, D-fructose, flucose-6-phosphate, raffinose, and galactose. Arabinose, melibiose, myo-inositol, D-mannitol, polyethylene glycol 2000, and di-Na EDTA had an opposite effect, i. 59-23-4 and 3458-28-4 which are cas registry numbers are also used here.e. the assimilates were moved toward ("pulled") the site of application of the org. substances. The "pushing" substances were apparently taken up from the spoplast and loaded into the phloem, whereas the "pulling" substances were not taken up into living cells; they apparently accumulated in the apoplast and built up a water stress which was counteracted by an increase in solute concn. in the parenchyma, thus creating a sink for assimulates. A third group of compds., i.e. xylose, sorbose, 2-deoxy-D-glucose, mannose, and sorbitol, had no perceptible effect on phloem transport. .
Arabinose oxidation by ions of variable-valence metals
Arabinose oxidation by ions of variable-valence metals. Some chemicals with cas registry numbers like 10028-22-5 and 5328-37-0 are also used. Krupenskii, V. I. (Ukhtinsk. Ind. Inst., Ukhta, USSR). Izv. Vyssh. Uchebn. Zaved., Lesn. Zh., (5), 124-5 (Russian) 1983. CODEN: IVZLAL. ISSN: 0536-1036. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 33 (Carbohydrates) Section cross-reference(s): 22 Kinetics were detd. for the oxidn. of L-(+)-arabinose to arabinonic acid by Cu2+, Ag+, Hg22+, Fe3+, Hg2+, and Ce4+ at concns. of 0.1 g-ion/L oxidant and 0.07 mol/L sugar, and at a temp. of 100°. The reaction was 1st order with respect to both arabinose and the metal ion and the rate consts. increased in the ion order above. .
