DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 53 (Mineralogical and Geological Chemistry) In brines with dissolved Ca-sulfates, the growth of quartz [14808-60-7] is attained by a close packed assemblage of nuclei. These are depicted as sharp spots, 250 ? in size, by SEM mode imaging. These are either spherical nuclei or electron optical diffusion features which are induced by smaller particles. Nuclei give quartz fibers by a coalescence process. The av. diam. of fibers is 1000 ?. Their length is 5-10 mm. By successive coalescences, fibers give ribbons, bidimensional sheets, and tridimensional quartz ultimately. In the quartz paracrystal resulting from repeated attachment of nuclei, the tridimensional continuity is attained by ageing of the first ppt. At intermediate stages of this evolution, the quartz paracrystal is crossed by very numerous inframicroscopic channels, leaving a high internal porosity in each paracrystal. The primary structure, characterized by a close packed assemblage of nuclei, is very similar to the organization of spherically amorphous SiO2 particles in precious opal. The ordered pptn. of both quartz nuclei in a paracryst. structure and amorphous SiO2 particles in a precious opal are the products of the colloidal ordered pptn. due to the 2nd potential well of the interaction energy between 2 particles. Quartz nucleation appears by the salting out of dissolved monomer SiO2. All this results from mixing of a brine and a SiO2 satd. soln.Except for chemicals metioned above, 14808-60-7 and 14798-04-0 are also used. Quartz nucleation may be improved by impurities (Al3+, hydrocarbons) in the growth medium. .

(T) and pressure (P) ranges 300-900° and 0.25-5.00 kbar for ratios of Li2O:Al2O3:SiO2:H2O of (1) 1:1:.8, (2) 1:1:8:0.8, (3) 1:1:6:0.8, and (4) 1:1:4:0.8. The mineral equils. shown in 4 P-V diagrams for the 4 sets of ratios given, involve the phases petalite (Pe) [1302-66-5], eucryptite (Euc) [1302-65-4], spodumene (Sp, a- and b-forms), and quartz (Q). In the phase diagram for ratio set 1 (corresponding to AlSi4O10), Pe appears as a free phase. In the phase diagram for ratio set 3 this Pe field is split into a Euc + Pe field at <600° and a Pe + b-Sp field at >600°; a 4-Sp + Pe field also appears. In the phase diagram for ratio set 4 a b-Sp field replaces the Pe + b-Sp and b-Sp + Q fields of the previous diagram. In regard to exptl. work an mineral equil. in the title system the calcd. phase diagrams imply that (1) phases reported by V. A. Kuznetzov et al. (1970) do not exist; (2) the equil. Pe + Euc-4-Sp, obtained by A. A. 7631-86-9 and 14808-60-7 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here. Sternberg et al. (1972) is achieved when the Li2O:Al2O3:SiO2 ratio is 1:1:4; (3) the lines for the reaction Pe = a - Sp + 2Q are different than those reported by D. B. Stewart (1963) and the reaction is dependent more on pressure than temp. and can achieve equil. only for Li2O:Al2O3:SiO2 ratio 1:1:8, and (4) the a- to b-Sp transition is dependent mainly on pressure, not on temp., as indicated by the data of A. P. Edgar (1966). .
