DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 64 (Pharmaceutical Analysis) A tubular 5-ethyl-5-phenylbarbiturate ion-selective electrode based on tetraoctylammonium 5-ethyl-5-phenylbarbiturate dissolved in o-nitrophenyl octyl ether and immobilized on poly(vinyl chloride) was constructed, tested, and applied. The intrinsic features of the proposed electrode were assessed by using a low-dispersion single-channel flow-injection anal. (FIA) system for performing repeated calibrations with Na 5-ethyl-5-phenylbarbiturate stds. 9002-86-2 and 14866-33-2 which are cas registry numbers of chemicals are mentioned., whose ionic strength was adjusted to 0.1M with 0.033M Na2SO4. The detn. of 5-ethyl-5-phenylbarbiturate in pharmaceutical prepns. was accomplished by intercalating the proposed electrode into a two-channel FIA manifold. The results obtained were compared with those provided by the British Pharmacopeis std. method. .

The structural characterization showed the existence of nanometer sized voids within the films. This previously unmentioned feature is responsible for the previous difficulties in modeling the optical properties with effective medium models. This can be remedied, using a two-tiered hierarchical effective medium model, which takes into account the existence of the voids. Using this model it was possible to fit the exptl. data, with only the void vol. fraction to be detd. by the overall fit, while the gold vol. fraction in the linker medium is fixed by the wavelength of the resonance peak. The model should be applicable to all such films, when the deposition method, which dets. the microstructure, is properly taken into account. .
