All drugs were given orally. PGE2 (0.2 mg/kg), PGE1 (0.74 mg/kg), arachidonic acid (129 mg/kg), castor oil (0.42 mL/kg), MgSO4 (373 mg/kg) and E. coli endotoxin (39.5 mg/kg) doubled intestinal fluid vol. Cyclooxygenase inhibitors reduced arachidonate-induced enteropooling (indomethacin [53-86-1] > acetylsalicylic acid [50-78-2] > paracetamol [103-90-2] > salicylate [63-36-5] > bismuth subsalicylate [14882-18-9]). Acetylsalicylic acid inhibited Escherichia coli endotoxin-, castor oil-, but not prostaglandin E2- or MgSO4-induced enteropooling. Acetylsalicylic acid may prove useful for the treatment of traveler's diarrhea.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The capabilities of Pepto-Bismol [71156-53-1] and its components (montmorillonite [1318-93-0] and Bi subsalicylate [14882-18-9]) to sequester bile acids from aq. soln. in vitro were compared with that of cholestyramine [11041-12-6]. Through a pH range of 3-9, all substances tested sequestered free and conjugated bile acids in quantities directly related to the concn. of the sequestering agent within the incubation mixt. Montmorillonite was more effective gram for gram than Bi subsalicylate. Pepto-Bismol, whose sequestering capacity approximated that of cholestyramine's, adsorbed more than either of its components alone. The relation between Pepto-Bismol's in vitro bile acid binding and its in vivo antidiarrheal properties is unknown.
