The first involves the reductive cleavage of the carbonyl group to give a m-alkylideneoxoditungsten compd. Cyclopropanecarboxaldehyde, c-C3H5CHO and W2(OCH2-tert-Bu)6(py)2 yield a m-cyclopropylmethylidene oxo compd. W2(O)(m-CH-c-C3H5)(OCH2-tert-Bu)6(py). The retention of the cyclopropyl ring in the deoxygenation reaction suggests that the cleavage of the C:O bond proceeds in a concerted manner and without radical or charge build up on the a-carbon atom. The second stage of the reaction involves the formation of the olefinic carbon-carbon bond. The dinuclear alkylidene fragment is efficiently used in this second stage, but the addnl. ketone or aldehyde may participate in the non-productive formation of pinacolates. An overall reaction scheme is proposed and a dimetallaoxacyclopentane complex is suggested in the sequence leading to the olefin. The reaction involving cyclohexenone (2 equiv) and W2(OCH2-tert-Bu)6(py)2 yields the novel compd. W2(O)(m-OC12H16)(OCH2-tert-Bu)6 (I; R = neopentyl) that may be viewed as the product derived from the vinylogous coupling of a m-cyclohexenylidene ligand with cyclohexenone. .
