DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) The addn. of erythritol [149-32-6] to defined medium enhanced the growth of the majority of B. abortus and B. melitensis strains tested, but the stimulatory effects of erythritol were less marked and more variable in undefined media (glycerol dextrose broth and tryptose broth). In addn., nearly 90% of the aminotic fluid samples from humans showed antibrucella activity, whereas amniotic fluid from cows and sheep bud no antibrucella activity. Therefore, the protection of humans (but not other animals) from abortion due to Brucella may be due to the absence of erythritol from human tissues and (or) to the antibrucella activity of human amniotic fluids.

Sorbitol [50-70-4] and mannitol [69-65-8] had better inhibition than glycerol [56-81-5], ethylene glycol [107-21-1], and erthritol [149-32-6].
