In the arteries both prazosin and rauwolscine displaced the noradrenaline (NA) [51-41-2] concn.-response (cr) curve towards higher concns. without redn. of the max. Neither clonidine [4205-90-7], nor oxymetazoline [1491-59-4] had any consistent contractile effects. Phenylephrine [59-42-7] had a lower potency than NA, but a similar intrinsic activity. In the veins, both prazosin and rauwolscine displaced the NA cr curve towards higher concns., but also depressed the max. Clonidine and oxymetazoline contracted veins from 3 of 7 and 4 of 6 patients. NA was more potent than phenylephrine in these vessels, and there was no significant difference in intrinsic activity. Thus, in human omental arteries, the postjunctional a-adrenoceptors are mainly of the a1-type, even if a small population of a2-adrenoceptors cannot be excluded. In omental veins, there seems to be a functionally important population of postjunctional a2-adrenoceptors occurring together with a population of a1-adrenoceptors.

(22%) constriction. Both prazosin and yohimbine, added to the norepinephrine soln., dose-dependently decreased the constrictory n response to norepinephrine. a1-Adrenoceptor stimulation by phenylephrine [59-42-7] caused weak constriction of the pial veins, whereas a2-adrenoceptor stimulation by oxymetazoline [1491-59-4] had no consistent constrictory effect. Thus, the sympathetic adrenergic system may play a role in regulating cerebral venous tone. .
