DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 19 (Fertilizers, Soils, and Plant Nutrition) Section cross-reference(s): 49 In manuf. of K sulfate crystals for the fertilizer industry by reaction of KCl soln. with solid langbeinite [14977-37-8] at 45-55°, the size of the crystals is increased by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a growth-stimulating agent contg. monosulfonated or monosulfated interface-active agent and a neutralized disulfonated interface-active agent in a wt. ratio of ~0.14-0.60. Thus, 350 g KCl was dissolved in 1 kg distd. water at 45°, and 0.78 g Dowfax 2A1 (Na alkyldiphenyloxide sulfonate) [12626-49-2], which was fortified with sufficient monosulfate to bring the wt. ratio to 0.46, was added. Diesel oil was used as an antifoaming agent, and 350 g ground langbeinite (<0.074 mm) was added. The mixt. was heated to 55°, and the K2SO4 crystals obtained were sepd. by centrifugation. The percentages of crystals retained by sieves of 0.833, 1.168, 1.651, and 2.362 mm were 55, 49, 36, and 3, resp., whereas in the control (produced with 1.09 g Dowfax 2A1, which contains contaminating monosulfate at a wt. ratio of only 0.053 to the disulfonate) only 0.5% of the crystals were retained by an 0.833-mm sieve.
