DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemicals) The accumulation of carotenoids, phytol [150-86-7], and chlorophyll by etiolated wheat seedlings during exposure to white light was inhibited equally by the herbicide Sandoz 6706 [23576-23-0] and its demethyl deriv. Sandoz 9789 [27314-13-2]. 61-82-5 and 61864-04-8 are also in the experiment. Treatment with amitrole (I) [61-82-5], however, inhibited the accumulation of chlorophyll more strongly than that of carotenoids and less strongly than that of phytol. The principal carotenoid detected after I treatment was lycopene [502-65-8]. I treatment led to the accumulation of new chlorophyll species (isolated as pheophytins) which contained all-trans-geranylgeraniol [24034-73-9] and dihydrogeranylgeraniol [61864-04-8] instead of phytol. The alcs. were isolated after sapon. of the corresponding pheophytin fractions and identified by thin-layer and gas chromatog. and by mass spectrometry. The new chlorophylls are considered to be intermediates in the biosynthesis of normal chlorophyll. .

A striking peak in antiviral activity was found for satd. alcs. having chain lengths from 10-14 C. Viruses having different membrane structure showed different susceptibilities to alcs. having different chain lengths and structural features. Decanol [112-30-1], dodecanol [112-53-8], and tetradecanol [112-72-1] readily inactivated herpes simplex virus and the enveloped bacterial virus .phi.6. The lipid-contg. virus PM2 was susceptible to decanol and dodecanol but comparatively resistant to tetradecanol. The branched-chain alc. phytol [150-86-7], a naturally occurring component of chlorophyll, was active against .phi.6 and herpes simplex virus but not against PM2. Polyoma virus and the bacteriophage .phi.23-1-a, which do not contain lipids, were not susceptible to inactivation by any of the alcs. tested. Expts. were also carried out to det. the effects of these compds. on cells. At 0.5 mM, decanol lysed human embryonic lung cells, erythrocytes, and the bacterial hosts for .phi. 111-87-5 and 112-72-1 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here.6 and PM2. Dodecanol, tetradecanol, and phytol at this concn. were less damaging to cells. At 0.05 mM, none of the alcs. caused observable cytopathic effects on human embryonic lung cells, although several of the alcs. at this concn. were active against herpes simplex virus. Dodecanol, tetradecanol, and phytol may warrant further studies as potential antiviral agents, particularly for topical application to virus-infected areas of the skin. .
