DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 71 (Nuclear Technology) The scintillation characteristics of solns. of butyl-PBD (BPBD) [15082-28-7] and tetraphenylbutadiene (TPB) [806-71-3] of viscosity ranging from that of pure styrene to that of pure polystyrene were investigated as a function of polymn. time. The overall objective of the project is to obtain plastic scintillation detectors of improved characteristics. Scintillation efficiencies increase monotonically with degree of conversion. The efficiency curves show a more dramatic dependence upon extent of polymn. at high conversions when the concn. of scintillator solute is decreased. This may reflect the influence of residual monomer as a competitive trap for the energy in transfer from polystyrene. The lifetime of the scintillation process is markedly dependent upon extent of polymn. The decay curves are poorly described by single exponential functions. Nevertheless, if such a crude representation is used a monotonic increase in scintillation time is obsd. as polymn. proceeds. A semi-empirical parameterization of the individual decay curves is possible in terms of 3 exponential functions. The relative increase in efficiency and/or lifetime in progressing from styrene to polystyrene as matrix energy donor, is greater from TPB than BPBD.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 73 (Optical, Electron, and Mass Spectroscopy and Other Related Properties) The synthesis of a high photoluminescence efficiency [88%, compared with tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)(Alq3)] org. material 9,9-dibutyl-N,N,N,N-tetraphenyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diamine (DTFD) via Ullmann condensation was reported. Exiciplex emission of the ITO/DTFD/PBD/Alq3/LiF/Al device was obsd. and the peak wavelength of the emission was measured to be 480 nm, which belongs to the blue region. A turn-on voltage as low as 4 V and maximal brightness as large as 400 cd m-2 were measured. The electroluminescence spectrum was obsd. to be blue-shifted with increase in applied voltage. .
