Four solid phases were pptd., AlF3.3H2O (up to .apprx. 15098-87-0 and 7784-18-1 which are cas registry numbers are also used here.120.degree.), cubic .alpha.-AlF3.H2O (decompn. of AlF3.3H2O in suspension), hexagonal .beta.-AlF3.H2O (direct from soln.) and the hydroxyfluoride Al(OH,F)3.H2O with an F/Al ratio of .apprx.2.5 (hydrolysis of AlF3). The extent of hydrolysis was established as a function of the initial AlF3 concn. X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric data for the monohydrates are given and differences between the 2 indicated. .

Solns. from superphosphate manuf. contain 6.12% AlF3 and for nucleation it is necessary to add 30 g nuclei/L and the circumferential speed of the stirrer must be 3 m/sec. Crystals with particle sizes of 60-120.mu. are obtained. .
