DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 22 (Physical Organic Chemistry) Using spectrophotometric and conductometric pulse radiolysis and in situ ESR techniques, it was found that .bul.OH adducts, formed from mono-, di-, and trimethoxylated BzOH derivs. by attachment of .bul.OH to nonsubstituted ring positions, react with H+ to yield radical zwitterions via elimination of H2O from the protonated adduct. With .bul.OH adducts from 2,4- and 2,6-(MeO)2C6H3CO2H and 2,4,5- and 2,4,6-(MeO)3C6H2CO2H radical zwitterions are additionally produced by a pH-independent process involving elimination of OH-. The radical zwitterions react with H adducts with rate consts. of (8-40) .times. 108 M-1 s-1. .
