Influence of mechanical and chemical weed control on growth and survival of tree plantings in semiarid regions
Influence of mechanical and chemical weed control on growth and survival of tree plantings in semiarid regions. Felker, Peter; Smith, Dominic; Wiesmann, Charles (Caesar Kleberg Wildl. Res. Inst., Texas A and I Univ., Kingsville, TX 78363, USA). For. Ecol. Manage., 16(1-4), 259-67 (English) 1986. CODEN: FECMDW. ISSN: 0378-1127. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Weed control strategies were evaluated for Prosopis alba and Leucaena leucocephala in south Texas for site prepn. prior to transplanting, during initial establishment of transplanted seedlings, and for mature plantings. In site prepn., glyphosate [1071-83-6] was used prior to deep tillage to eliminate perennial grasses such as Cynodon dactylon, Sorghum halepenes, and Cenchrus ciliaris. Moderately expensive, preemergence row crop herbicides that have short residuals (45-90 days) but low toxicity to seedlings were examd. for use at transplant. These herbicides included oryzalin [19044-88-3], oxyfluorfen [42874-03-3], napropamide [15299-99-7], atrazine [1912-24-9], linuron [330-55-2], metolachlor [51218-45-2], and alachlor [15972-60-8]. The most effective herbicide was oryzalin at 2.8 kg/ha, which gave a 30% increase in survival and a 300-400% increase in biomass for P. alba and L. leucocephala over non-cultivated, non-herbicide treated control plots. Tree growth following preemergence/transplant herbicide treatment was compared to mech. weed control using a single row sweep cultivator. In 1983 and 1984 cultivation alone doubled the biomass productivity of Prosopis and Leucaena, while use of herbicides increased productivity only 30% over the cultivation-alone treatment. Long residual (180 day), inexpensive herbicides that are not particularly safe for use at transplant were examd. at 2 rates on 2.5-yr-old P. alba trees. These herbicides included DCPA [1861-32-1], diuron [330-54-1], norflurazon [27314-13-2], simazine [122-34-9], bromacil [314-40-9] and bromacil-diuron mixt. [8071-35-0]. Bromacil was phytotoxic at the lowest rate (0.25 kg/ha), and simazine was phytotoxic at 4.5 kg/ha. Diuron provided the most cost effective weed control where perennial grasses were not present. The more costly norflurazon controlled problem perennial grasses C. dactylon and S. halepense.
Field evaluation of herbicides in the fruits, 1977
Field evaluation of herbicides in the fruits, 1977. Rom, Roy C. (Dep. Hortic. For., Univ. Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark., USA). Arkansas, Agric. Exp. Stn., Mimeogr. Ser., 260, 25 pp. (English) 1978. CODEN: AKAMA6. ISSN: 0099-5010. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemicals) Oxadiazon [19666-30-9] at <12 lb/acre failed to give satisfactory weed control but appeared to be safe to use following peach tree planting. Methazole [20354-26-1] at 3 or 4.5 lb/acre gave good weed control in a 2nd y use following planting and was not detrimental to tree growth. Oryzalin [19044-88-3] at £9 lb/acre also gave satisfactory weed control and was not phytotoxic to peaches in a 2nd y. Spring applied napromide [15299-99-7] alone or in combination with diuron [330-54-1] followed by a fall napromide application gave excellent all-y weed control. Oryzalin lost efficiency in irrigated areas. Oxadiazon in combination with a postemergence herbicide gave continued good results. The efficacy of glyphosate [1071-83-6] did not appear to be affected when used in a combination tank mix with diuron, terbacil [5902-51-2], or methazole. In studies in peach orchards where the same herbicide program was used for 4 to 13 y there did not appear to be any deleterious effect on tree growth or soil build up of herbicide. Terbacil alone showed a consistent loss in control to unsatisfactory levels in wet y as the season progressed. Several studies demonstrated that glyphosate can be used in peach orchards of various tree ages without appreciable damage or limitations to tree growth as measured by truck diam. and terminal growth. Killing trunk shoots with Paraquat [4685-14-7] was a satisfactory way to eliminate glyphosate-sensitive foliage from peach trunk areas.
