DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) Approx. 50 frequently used autimicrobials in cosmetics were detected and detd. by conventional methods, such as thin layer and gas-liq. chromatog., fluorometry, or polarog. Modifications and/or adaptability of the methods are discussed. Formaldehyde [50-00-0] was made visible with a 1% soln. of 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole within 3 min. CH2O donors gave pos. 63455-20-9 are also occured in this study. reaction also. Seven compds. with close Rf's, namely hexachlorophene [70-30-4], bromochlorophene [15435-29-7], bithionol [97-18-7], dichloro-m-xylene [27708-36-7] triclosan [1319-77-3], tribromsalan [87-10-5], and fluorophene [4776-06-1] were confirmed from an ext. contg. 100 .mu.g of the active ingredient. Thin layer chromatog. cleanup procedure was successfully adapted for the measuring of hexachlorophene. Phenols and halogenated phenols were detd. by gas chromatog. after flash silylation, from a soln. contg. 50-100 .mu.g of the compd. .
