DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) Aq. vanadyl oxalate [15500-04-6] is an active catalyst precursor for hydrocracking of high-metals-content heavy oils to distillable fractions. The reaction was carried out at 440°, H pressure 100 kg/cm2, oil feed rate 1 L/h, and stirring rate 950 rpm. The oxalate, prepd. in-situ from V2O5 and (CO2H)2 (1:4 mol. ratio) in water, was as effective in the hydrocracking of Gold Lake bitumen and Gach Saran vacuum residue as vanadyl acetylacetonate or V 2,4-pentanedionate, but not in that Morichall crude or Boscan crude.

V compd. with an aq. soln. contg. a sol. V compd., granulating, and pelletizing the granulate contg. <5% H2O at .gtoreq.25 MN/m2. The amt. of the sol. V compd. is 1-5% based on the insol. V compd. Optionally, 0.5-3% lubricant is added before pelletizing. The cylindrical or spherical pellets of V carbide, oxycarbide, nitride, or carbonitride are esp. suitable for alloying of steels. Thus, 200 g (NH4)2V6O16 [12207-63-5] was mixed 1.5 h with 50 mL aq. soln. contg. 7.5 g vanadyl oxalate [15500-04-6]. The mixt. was dried at 120.degree., sieved to remove the <0.6 mm diam. fraction, mixed with 2% stearic acid [57-11-4], and compacted at 75 MN/m2. The resulting cylindrical pellets, 5 .times. 5 mm, broke under a compressive load of 8 kg, compared to 1.5 kg for the pellets without vanadyl oxalate. After carburization in a CH4-H atm., the corresponding loads were 17.4 and 4.5 kg. .
