The monomer, p-methacryloyloxybenzoic acid (IV) [15721-10-5], did not polymerize in the cryst. state under .gamma.-irradn.; however, upon melting or dissoln. in a mesophase it polymd. so rapidly that it was difficult to obtain reproducible phase transitions for IV-II and IV-III systems. Poly(Me methacrylate) (V) [9011-14-7] was also prepd., and, along with I, was methylated with 1-methyl-3-p-tolyltriazine [21124-13-0]. The soly. of I and V in the mesophase was discussed.
