Net fluid secretion was stimulated by intraarterial (i.a.) infusion of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). The anesthetics exerted only minimal influence on the physiol. rates of glucose and water absorption. However, when the fluid-secretory mechanism of the mucosa was stimulated with either PGE1 or VIP, pentobarbitone allowed the greates rates of secretion, but halothane prevented secretion. It is suggested that, of the anesthetics used, pentobarbitone is the most appropriate for intestinal secretion expts.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Expts. involving anesthesia of rats with nembutal (I) [76-74-4] and urethane (II) [51-79-6], given either singly or in combination, support the hypothesis that barbiturates such as I depress the elec. activity of cerebellar Purkinje cells mainly by affecting mossy-fiber inputs to the latter, whereas II acts mainly upon the climbing-fiber inputs. In expts. combining chloralose [15879-93-3] with I or II, it appeared that chloralose simultaneously depressed mossy-fiber inputs and facilitated climbing-fiber inputs. .
