Preparation of Lucas reagent of enhanced utility and its use in synthesis of cycloaliphatic chlorides from cycloaliphatic alcohols. Orihuela, Felix M.; Malcolm, Arcelio J.; Senaratne, K. Pushpananda A. ( USA ). Can. Pat. 1490-04-6 and 16052-42-9 are cas registry numbers. These chemicals are also mentioned in this article. Appl. CA 2287151 AA 25 Apr 2001,13 pp. (English). (Canada). CODEN: CPXXEB. CLASS: ICM: C09K003-00. ICS: C07C023-02; C07C017-16. APPLICATION: CA 1999-2287151 25 Oct 1999. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 30 (Terpenes and Terpenoids) Section cross-reference(s): 24, 49 Gaseous anhyd. hydrogen chloride is introduced into an aq. soln. of zinc chloride under conditions effective to produce a more efficient Lucas reagent than a Lucas reagent made by mixing solid, anhyd. zinc chloride with 38% hydrochloric acid. For example, the reaction rate of such Lucas reagent with L-menthol, to give menthyl chloride, is much faster and requires a much shorter reaction period than when the Lucas reagent is formed in the conventional manner from anhyd., solid zinc chloride and concd. 38% hydrochloric acid. Also, the Lucas reagent made in this manner is highly amenable to recycling, and requires only addn. of hydrogen chloride to replenish the catalyst for an ensuing run. .
