Their corresponding polymers (i.e., PA4OO4C and PA6OO6C) were obtained by free radical polymn. using AIBN as an initiator. The monomer A4OO4C showed smectic liq. cryst. phase and a clear fan texture was obsd. 16089-48-8 and 917561-03-6 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. under optical polarizing microscope. However, no liq. cryst. phase was found for A6OO6C. In contrast, PA4OO4C showed no liq. cryst. phase while PA6OO6C showed a clear nematic schlieren texture during the cooling process. The optical polarized microscope of E 5 cast on the top of the polymer film also showed the alignment. Furthermore, the irradn. of the polymer films by LP-UV light led to the cycloaddn. of the cinnamoyl groups, resulting in the simultaneous alignment of the biphenyl groups. .

Thus, polyepichlorohydrin 4.63 g was dissolved in hexamethylphosphoramide 40 mL, K cinnamate 11.2 and methyltriethylammonium iodide 1 g added, and the soln. heated at 100.degree. for 10 h to give a photopolymer. The photopolymer 2 g was then dissolved in cyclohexanone 10 mL, coated on a glass plate, dried to give a 1-.mu. layer, exposed through a neg. Step Tablet No. 2 to a 40-W lamp at 10 cm for 15 min and developed in PhCl to produce a pos. insol. polymer image up to the 3rd step. .
